Part Number, Interchange & VIN Search for Auto Parts Stores
Professional parts buyers rarely browse. They type a part number: an OE number, a competitor's number, a superseded number or whatever is stamped on the old part. StrikeTru builds search for auto parts stores that finds the right part from any of those numbers, and from a VIN or license plate, so trade buyers order in seconds instead of calling.

|---|---|
| Your part number | Exact and normalized matching (dashes, spaces, prefixes) |
| OE number | OE references stored as structured attributes |
| Competitor interchange | Interchange/cross-reference tables, ideally from PIES data |
| Superseded number | Supersession chains that redirect to the current part |

Five ways parts buyers search, and what each needs
| Search type | Example query | What makes it work |
|---|---|---|
| Your part number | BR-4471 | Exact and normalized matching (dashes, spaces, prefixes) |
| OE number | the vehicle maker's number | OE references stored as structured attributes |
| Competitor interchange | another brand's number | Interchange/cross-reference tables, ideally from PIES data |
| Superseded number | an old number replaced by a new one | Supersession chains that redirect to the current part |
| Vehicle (VIN or plate) | a 17-character VIN or a plate number | Decoding to a vehicle, then filtering by fitment |
Why part-number search fails on most parts sites
Formatting
"BR4471", "BR-4471" and "br 4471" return different results, or none.
Missing cross-references
Interchange data exists in the PIM or a spreadsheet but isn't indexed.
Dead ends on superseded parts
The old number returns nothing instead of the replacement.
Keyword search on numbers
Generic search engines treat a part number like a word and rank partial matches above exact ones.
No zero-result monitoring
Nobody sees the searches that failed, so they never get fixed.
What we build
Normalized part-number matching
Rules that strip formatting, handle brand prefixes and rank exact matches first.
Interchange and supersession data
Cross-reference and supersession tables, managed in the PIM and indexed for search, often sourced from PIES interchange segments.
Fitment and product data →VIN and license-plate lookup
A VIN or plate is decoded to a vehicle through a data provider, then matched to your fitment data. Lookup only works as well as the fitment underneath it.
Search platform configuration
Set-up and tuning of site search platforms such as Searchspring (now part of Athos Commerce), with synonyms, part-number rules and merchandising. For an automotive keys distributor, we connected Akeneo PIM to Searchspring and BigCommerce across 50,000+ SKUs and 100+ brands.

Part Number, Interchange & VIN Search FAQs
Short answers to what buyers ask most. Each links to a deeper page where one exists.
What is interchange search in auto parts?
Interchange search lets a buyer enter another brand's part number and find your equivalent part. It relies on cross-reference data, often from PIES interchange records, being indexed by your site search.
How do you handle superseded part numbers?
We store supersession chains in the product data, so a search for an old number shows the current replacement instead of returning nothing.
Can our store find parts by VIN or license plate?
Yes, with a VIN or plate decoding service and good fitment data. The service identifies the vehicle; your fitment data decides which parts show.
Is this different from year-make-model search?
Yes. YMM search starts from a vehicle and suits consumers. Part-number and interchange search start from a number and suit trade buyers. Most parts stores need both. See Commerce Apps.
Why does our site search miss exact part numbers?
Usually because of formatting differences, missing normalization rules, or a search engine that ranks partial text matches above exact numbers. All three can be fixed with configuration and data.
